ST CUTHBERT'S CROSS RESTORATION

We have been in touch with English Heritage with a view to restoring the Cross.English Heritage will provide a grant to point up the base in sand and lime but cannot allow a new cross as it would be too heavy for the rather now thin upright. They have suggested that we commission a scaled down version, in either wood or metal, that could be attached to the upright. After some discussion the decision has been made to go with the wood idea.

If anyone has a photograph(s) or picures of the cross when it was more complete we would appreciate your assistance in achieving our goal. Please contact Kate Proudfoot (01325 377949).

CENTRAL PLAN NOTICE BOARD

With the assistance of a grant obtained through County Councillor Michael Heseltine's NYCC 'Pot of Gold' we have purchased a Notice Board for the purpose of maintaining a central claiming dates diary that is accessible by all. The board will be sited at the village School, with their kind permission, and anyone who has any dates for forthcoming events are welcome to advertise them on the board. Hopefully this will eliminate village event clashes. To place an advert in the date plan please contact Phil Porteous (01325 377949) or the Parish Clerk, Kate Proudfoot (01325 467984)

MIDDLETON LODGE PLANNING APPLICATION UPDATE

After what has turned out to be a much longer preparation time than most of us expected, the planning application for quarrying and other complementary works of restoration, leisure and retail activities at Middleton Lodge has now reached the committee on 26th August. It is being considered by the County Council’s Planning and Regulatory and Functions Committee.

I have always felt that there should be a full committee site visit before a final decision is taken, and that is now the recommendation to the committee.

The application is so huge and complex, and its importance for the future so extensive, that I feel most strongly that this is essential for the committee (of which I am not a member) to be fully appraised of the situation. Moreover, it so happens that none of the eleven committee members are from Richmondshire and a close acquaintance with the local situation will not come amiss.

Foretelling the future is a dangerous game, but I expect a site visit will be arranged as recommended, and it will probably take place in September. A full report would then be considered by the committee during the autumn. We shall see.

IMPORTANT NEWS RE ESSENTIAL BUS SERVICE 34 - The Future

Arriva North East has announced that it will cease to operate the No.34 bus service from the end ofApril because it is no longer commercially viable, even with the current County Coiuncil's subsidy. The County Council has therefore agreed to subsidise this service completely until the end of July, so until then nothing will change. During this period, the use of buses will be monitored, and a careful review carried out by the County Council of the needs of local people

I know there is strong concern felt in some quarters about this locally, and we must use the immediate future to put on record the specific requirements of individuals which would justify retaining some form of public transport after the end of July. The current service is vital for some to reach medical, shopping, social and recreational facilities, and it is important that details of these needs are made known.

At the present time, the County Council spends approximately £6m per year on public transport subsidies, and some would find it difficult to keep going out of public money any service where the buses are so
frequently running just about empty. The review may well also look at the rescheduling of services, careful correlation between needs ad what is available, alternative opportunities, and so on.

Please, therefore, if you have a definite need of public transport along the No. 34 route, send the details
to the Public Passenger Transport Unit at County Hall, marked for the attention of Dianne Pottage, and it would be helpful for me to receive a copy too. Do this as soon as possible, so that the matter can be
carefully considered well in time for the end of July. In this way, I hope a very acceptable result can be achieved for all concerned.

8 July 2008:

  1. 9 new dog bins have been kindly donated to the village by an anonymous benefactor - Their generosity is much appreciated.
  2. We would like to take the opportunity to thank all those residents who kindly donated money towards the cost of the new windows in Barton Village Institute, which we are everyone will agree looks very smart.
  3. Mirror at T-junction Silver Street and Church Lane - see copy content of letter from NYCC.

May 2008:

  1. The Former Haulage Depot: The Parish Council is actively pursuing the owners of the depot to secure and demolish the buildings on the site and we will keep you informed of the situation.
  2. Pot Holes: We have a large number of deep potholes along Chapel Row which the Parish Council have contacted the Highways Department who have promised to sort the situation as soon as possible.
  3. Youth Club: As a Parish Council we are aware of the concerns about young people hanging around the seat on St Cuthbert's Green but also recognise there is not a youth centre, or similar, which they can visit/spend time. We were wondering if anyone feels that they could commit to setting up and running a youth club in the village. If anyone is interested please contact the clerk on 01325 467984 or speak to one of the councillors.
  4. Village Green: The Parish Council has attempted to see if it was possible to continue the footpath between Wells Green and Marygate onto the Village Green but after consulting with North Yorkshire County Council and the Planning Inspectorate it has become clear that it is not really feasible.
