IMPORTANT NEWS RE ESSENTIAL BUS SERVICE 34 - The Future

Arriva North East has announced that it will cease to operate the No.34 bus service from the end ofApril because it is no longer commercially viable, even with the current County Coiuncil's subsidy. The County Council has therefore agreed to subsidise this service completely until the end of July, so until then nothing will change. During this period, the use of buses will be monitored, and a careful review carried out by the County Council of the needs of local people

I know there is strong concern felt in some quarters about this locally, and we must use the immediate future to put on record the specific requirements of individuals which would justify retaining some form of public transport after the end of July. The current service is vital for some to reach medical, shopping, social and recreational facilities, and it is important that details of these needs are made known.

At the present time, the County Council spends approximately £6m per year on public transport subsidies, and some would find it difficult to keep going out of public money any service where the buses are so
frequently running just about empty. The review may well also look at the rescheduling of services, careful correlation between needs ad what is available, alternative opportunities, and so on.

Please, therefore, if you have a definite need of public transport along the No. 34 route, send the details
to the Public Passenger Transport Unit at County Hall, marked for the attention of Dianne Pottage, and it would be helpful for me to receive a copy too. Do this as soon as possible, so that the matter can be
carefully considered well in time for the end of July. In this way, I hope a very acceptable result can be achieved for all concerned.
